If there is one thing friends and family know about me, it’s that I live for rice and cheesecake. Throw some kabobs and pita bread in the mix, and I’m having a great time.

Sarah’s Kabob Shop is a Mediterranean restaurant in Greensboro my family has enjoyed a long time.. Located right off West Market Street, the Egyptian-themed eatery has been bringing flavor through its chicken and beef gyros, kabobs, souvlakis, and more for 14 years. It is family-owned, named after the owner’s first daughter.

I have had a growing fascination with Mediterranean culture over the last year, specifically Greek. While I’m a little rusty on the mythology and trying to read up more on it over the summer, the food is what fascinates me the most.

Last summer, I went on a cruise through the Mediterranean to celebrate leaving high school and going to college. I learned how wonderful the food is throughout that part of Europe. While still close together, each country had its own spin on certain meals and country-specific specialities. It was also just the most beautiful part of the world I’ve ever seen, in real life or even in pictures.

It’s crazy to think that it’s been roughly ten years since I first tasted the food at Sarah’s. While I may have changed drastically, the food is the same as I remember. Luckily, my taste buds have broadened since I was nine years old. I was also a bit pickier in those days.

I always like to get a kabob plate. Who doesn’t like something you eat off of a stick? This week I went with a mixed platter that included chicken and beef for some variety. However, there’s no doubt that I have a strong preference for their beef. The seasoning is simply heavenly.

Cheesecake, for me, is sacred. If you mess up this pristine dessert, it is hard to get my culinary trust back. So once I saw it on the menu, I had to order it. And lo and behold, it was perfect. It had a creamy cream cheese filling that was simply to die for.

Baklava is another Mediterranean classic on their menu. While it’s never been my cup of tea, I’m sure that, like other desserts on their menu, it’s nothing short of delicious.

There are always many places to feast in Greensboro, especially on Market Street. Sarah’s holds a special place in my heart for family dinners and reminds me of my first time traveling abroad. Having a restaurant built on family for families like mine is just some of what makes it so special.
